Control Systems Specialist

Salary: £30k – £32k depending on experience.

The Role

The Control Systems Specialist is a senior position within TSL’s Control & Distro department, created to lead the delivery of our rack build and control equipment to the highest standard. Rack diagrams and system configurations come to the department directly from clients, and it is this role’s responsibility to interpret those requirements and deliver a completed, tested, and correctly configured build ready for use by our customers on site.

Where no specific configuration is provided, the Control Systems Specialist is expected to apply their expertise and TSL’s prep standards to produce a build that is logical, professional, and ready to use, setting the standard for the department rather than waiting to be directed. This is a warehouse based role reporting to the Department Manager. In the Department Manager’s absence, the Control Systems Specialist assumes responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the department.

Key Responsibilities
Equipment Preparation & Maintenance

  • Prepare all control equipment to TSL’s standard: powering on, firmware checks and updates, clearing
previous show data, testing for correct output, and ensuring all cables and accessories are accounted for
    and packed with the unit.
  • Check in control equipment returned from hire, logging any shortages or faults and returning all items to
    prep standard promptly.
  • Carry out pre-dispatch checks to confirm all items are included, fully operational, and cleanly presented.

Rack Builds & Systems Configuration

  • Read, interpret, and follow client-supplied rack diagrams and system configurations to deliver accurate,
    complete rack builds.
  • Manage the full rack build process: racking components to the correct positions, dressing and securing
power cabling, patching and dressing network infrastructure, and completing all configuration work as
    specified.
  • Ensure all cabling is dressed and labelled to a professional standard, and that the completed build is clean,
    logical, and clearly documented.
  • For jobs without a specific configuration plan, apply TSL’s prep standards and your own technical judgement
to produce a build that is ready to use and sets a consistent standard across the department.
  • Prepare stock rack configurations so they leave the warehouse tested and operational out of the box
    wherever the show design allows.

Department Cover

  • In the absence of the Department Manager, take responsibility for the day-to-day running of the Control &
Distro department, including directing the team, managing workload priorities, and escalating any issues to
    the Warehouse Manager as required.

Warehouse Operations & Logistics

  • Where required (if licensed), operate forklift trucks to position, store, and retrieve items of rental stock.
  • Load and unload equipment safely and efficiently. This role involves regular manual handling of bulky and
    heavy technical equipment.
  • Keep all work areas clean, tidy, and efficiently organised.

Team & Business Support

  • Share knowledge of control systems and rack build standards with colleagues, contributing to the wider
    team’s development.
  • Provide cross-departmental support as directed during busy periods.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and raise them constructively with the Department
    Manager.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all work-related information.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere to the company’s Health and Safety Policy at all times, including safe manual handling practices.
  • Ensure compliance with all company policies, rules, procedures, and obligations.

Representing TSL

  • Clients, suppliers, and drivers regularly visit the warehouse. It is essential that you represent TSL and its
reputation to the highest standard at all times.
  • Conduct yourself in a professional and courteous manner around clients and visitors at all times.
  • Maintain a good standard of personal appearance and presentation.
  • A cheerful demeanour, engaging personality, and sense of humour would be a huge advantage in this role.

Skills & Qualities Required
Essential

  • Demonstrable experience in control systems within a live events, AV, or broadcast environment, with a solid
understanding of signal flow, networking, and system configuration.
  • Ability to read and work from client-supplied rack diagrams and system configurations, delivering accurate
    and complete builds to specification.
  • Confident working without a specific brief; able to apply technical knowledge and good judgement to
    produce a professional result independently.
  • High standard of cable dressing, labelling, and presentation.
  • Methodical and detail-oriented, with a commitment to leaving equipment in a consistent, known good state.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively within a team and take
    responsibility in a senior capacity.
  • Flexible and adaptable; able to respond to changes in workload, hours, and schedules at short notice.
  • Physically fit and able to undertake regular manual handling of heavy and bulky equipment.
  • Experience with a range of lighting control desk platforms.

Desirable

  • Electrical knowledge and/or qualifications, including familiarity with PAT testing.
  • Experience in a rental house or warehouse prep environment.
  • Valid forklift truck licence (training can be provided for the right candidate).
